Blazers Defeat Bethel 74-60

The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (11-4 overall, 9-3 MIAC) began the second half of conference play with a 74-60 win over Bethel tonight.

The first half began with 16 lead changes over 12 minutes, with neither team leading by more than three points.  At this point, CSB finally secured the lead, compiling an 12-1 for a 32-22 score.  The Blazers shot a 55% field goal percentage in the half, holding onto a 36-29 as they headed into the lockerroom.

The Royals came out with a 8-2 run to bring the score to 38-37 with 17:30 remaining, at which point the Blazers strung together a 7-0 and 5-3 run to jump ahead 50-40 with 12:30 left on the clock.  CSB continued to extend their lead, climbing ahead by as much as 18 before winning 74-60.

Junior forward Laura Canton (Pine Island, MN, Pine Island) led the Blazers with 19 points, 14 of which came in the first half.  Junior post Heather Gillund (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) and junior wing Amy Stifter (Watertown, MN, Watertown-Mayer) each had 11 points, while junior point guard Devin Bowlin (Winona, MN, Winona Cotter) added eight points and six assists.

Up next, the Blazers travel to Carleton to take on the Knights on Sat., Jan. 23 at 1 p.m.

Athletes of the Week
Julia Renner
Renner placed first and second in the triple jump and long jump respectively at the MIAC Championships.  Her winning jump of 11.23 meters in the triple jump met an NCAA provisional mark as well.
