Blazers Drop a Pair of One-Run Games

The College of Saint Benedict softball team dropped a pair of close games Friday morning at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida.  The Blazers were unable to hold onto leads in both games as they fell to 4-6 overall on the season.  York College topped the Blazers 5-4, and Widener University broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning to hand CSB their fourth consecutive loss.

Against York, junior Alyssa Kubesh (Buffalo Lake, MN, Buffalo Lake-Hector) gave the Blazers a 4-1 lead in the top of the third inning when she doubled with the bases loaded.  It wasn't enough as York scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the game 5-4 and earn their second win of the week over the Blazers.  Kubesh finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and three RBIs.  Junior Kristen Herges (Rochester, MN, John Marshall) added a base hit, two runs scored, and two walks.

Against Widener, CSB jumped out to early lead again after a three-run first inning highlighted by Kubesh's two RBI single.  Junior Abby Richardson (Storm Lake, IA, St. Mary's) added a home run over the centerfield fence in the fourth inning, and junior Kirsten Fasching (Montrose, MN, Watertown-Mayer) hit a solo home run to tie the game 5-5.  Kubesh went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Richardson was 1-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI.

CSB will play their final two games in Florida tomorrow, March 6th, against Webster University a 9 am and Wittenberg University at 1 pm.
