Entering Saturday's games, the College of Saint Benedict softball was looking to finish their trip to the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida on a positive note. The Blazers (0-0 MIAC, 5-7 overall) fell to Webster University 5-4 after rallying in the bottom of the seventh inning but bounced back to defeat Wittenberg University 4-3 in the second game of the day to earn a split.
Trailing 5-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, CSB was able to score three runs to cut the deficit to 5-4, but they stranded the tying run on third and winning run on second to end the game. Senior
Beth Hanson (Faribault, MN, Bethlehem Academy) led the Blazer offense with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs. Junior
Kristen Herges (Rochester, MN, John Marshall) added a double and two RBIs, and sophomore
Sierra Dooley (Spring Lake Park, MN, Spring Lake Park) added a double and a run scored, but it wasn't enough as CSB dropped their third consecutive one-run game.
Against Wittenberg, CSB found themselves on the winning end of a one-run game. The Blazers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning and added another run in the top of the second inning to extend their lead to 3-0. Wittenberg rallied to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, but CSB answered when junior
Kirsten Fasching (Montrose, MN, Watertown-Mayer) knocked in Dooley with an RBI single to give the Blazers a 4-3 advantage. Fasching finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and was the only Blazer with multiple hits in the game. Junior
Elle Borba (Ontario, CA, St. Lucy's Priory) went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, and Dooley was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Sophomore
Emma Alwin (Plymouth, MN, Wayzata) picked up the win on the mound for the Blazers. Alwin finished the week with a 3-3 record.
The College of Saint Benedict will take on Division 2 St. Cloud State University in a doubleheader on March 19, 2010. Game time is set for 5 pm in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
