Team
Box Score

Head volleyball coach Nicole Hess earns her first win at the College of Saint Benedict as the Blazer volleyball team (1-0 overall, 0-0 MIAC) started its season off right with a 3-0 win over Northwestern College this evening in Claire Lynch Hall.

The Eagles started the game off with a 5-2 lead over the Blazers, but CSB tied the game at eight before pulling ahead.  Although Northwestern was able to bring the score within one a 10-9, the Blazers kept their distance as the score approached 18-14.  The teams exchanged point for point for the remainder of the set, but CSB's 10 kills gave them the edge, winning the set 25-20.

The Blazers kept their momentum into the second set, leading 6-1 at the start.  However, the Eagles came back to tie the score at six, but at a 7-7 tie score, the Blazers took the lead for the remainder of the set.  CSB strung together a 7-1 to pick up a 14-8 lead.  The Blazers kept their distance, picking up the 25-16 win.

In the final set, the Blazers collected four kills at the start for a 10-4 lead.  The Eagles, however, wouldn't back down, bringing the score within one at 11-10.  CSB, however, went on an 8-1 run to extend the lead to 19-11.  The Blazers went on to win 25-16.

Four Blazers recorded six kills in the win - senior right side Kayli Schumacher (East Grand Forks, MN, Sacred Heart), junior outside hitter Chelsie Sobieck (Wyoming, MN, Forrest Lake), sophomore middle blocker Shannon Bassett (Eagan, MN, Eagan), and first-year outside hitter Lexi Alm (Stacy, MN, Forest Lake).  Schumacher also added four blocks on the night.  Senior setter Amber Wortz (Fairfax, MN, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop) totalled 15 set assists.  Northwestern was led by Greta King, Elissa Sandstrom, and Chelsea Koth, each of which has six kills.

Up next, CSB travels to the UW-Eau Claire Labor Day Tournament, where they first play Carthage at 5:15 p.m. on Fri., Sept. 3.
